Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the dead, has been waiting for a year in Rubacava, a port town, for Meche Colomar, the woman he loves. He sees her leaving on a ship with his rival Domino Hurley, and decides to follow them. To do so, he needs to join the crew of the SS Limbo, an old ship that is also heading to Puerto Zapato, where Meche and Domino are going. He faces several obstacles, such as getting a union card, finding tools for his mechanic friend Glottis, and replacing a drunk sailor named Naranja. He also gets involved in the affairs of some of the town’s residents, such as Olivia Ofrenda, Nick Virago, Lola, and Maximino. He manages to overcome all the challenges, but his nightclub, the Calavera Café, is shut down by the police. He escapes with Glottis on the SS Limbo, and the year ends with him mopping the deck as the ship sails away from Rubacava.
