Majestic 12, often abbreviated as MJ-12, is the name given to an alleged secret committee of scientists, military leaders, and government officials formed in the United States in the late 1940s. According to UFO conspiracy theories, MJ-12 was established by an executive order issued by President Harry S. Truman in 1947 to oversee and manage matters related to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and extraterrestrial encounters.

The origins of the MJ-12 conspiracy theory can be traced back to a series of controversial documents that surfaced in the 1980s. These documents, known as the "Majestic 12 documents," were allegedly leaked by anonymous insiders and suggested that the United States government had been actively covering up evidence of UFOs and extraterrestrial contact.

However, the authenticity of these documents has been widely debated among researchers and experts. Many UFO researchers and skeptics have criticized the Majestic 12 documents, pointing to inconsistencies, anachronisms, and indications of forgery. As a result, the consensus among mainstream historians and scholars is that the Majestic 12 documents are likely hoaxes and not credible evidence of a secret UFO committee.

It's important to note that while UFO sightings and encounters are reported worldwide, there is currently no concrete evidence to support the existence of MJ-12 or any other government cover-up related to UFOs and extraterrestrial life. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) continues through scientific efforts such as radio astronomy, but as of my last update in September 2021, there had been no confirmed direct contact with alien civilizations
