3) Welcome to 60 seconds to code where I show you how code in 60 seconds or less. My name is Faisal and I have been in IT for 15 years. I have been an architect, developer, business analyst, trainer, and systems admin. I also have three AWS certifications and am currently working on an AWS migration project.
4) This video is not going to be 60 seconds but there is good reason for that. Recently one of my cousins called me. He is a recent college grad and he wanted to know if I could give him some pointers on how to get an entry level job specifically related to cloud computing and AWS as this is something he found interesting.
5) This got me thinking what is an entry level job and do they exists in cloud computing?
a. Usually IT entry level jobs consist of development, server admin, DBA, help-desk support, business analysis, process modeling, etc.
b. Very seldom do I see a cloud entry level job because cloud is paradigm, not a single technology.
c. You can find entry level .net developer or project manager jobs but never a cloud job.
6) Well then how to get an entry level job related to cloud computing. I will tell you.
a. If you are working in IT, you are ahead of the game. Look for and try to work in assignments and project that allow you to work in a cross functional team where many people play many roles. If your company is doing a cloud migration or starting to consider using the cloud for launching new solutions, see if you can get a spot on that team. Talk to your manager, good things come to those who ask.
b. If you are a fresh college or bootcamp graduate and are looking for your first job, your read will be a little tougher but not impossible
i. Experience is key, here are some creative ways of getting experience
1. Create a web site using AWS S3 static hosting for your religious organization or volunteer group or something else you are passionate about
2. You can even host your own word press blog on AWS
3. Incorporate the cloud into your passion project
a. Most developers have a passion project, so integrate it into the cloud
ii. Get certified
1. Go for the cloud practitioner cert first as its easiest. If you can pass the associate level certifications, all the better but the basic cert will still go a long way
iii. Get trained
1. No you don’t need to drop another 60 grans for undergrad degree or bootcamp. Head over to udemy and take the developer or architect course 15 bucks and get a certificate of completion.
iv. Network network network
1. Join linkedin groups
2. Start adding people to your linkedin network who work in the industry
3. Start posting about the cloud on linkedin profile
v. Apply for positions
1. Junior dev positions are plenty but you will give yourself an edge if you have cloud on your resume
2. Target cloud/aws related keywords and apply and follow up
vi. Now imagine if you are in the position of a project manager who is looking to augment his team. He comes across your resume, You have 1 or 2 experiences with cloud, you have a certification, you certificates of completion / training and you are active on linkedin and happen to be in the same linked in group as you. You will be far more likely to get hired
vii. if the project manager is stretched thin on his budget and you can compromise a little on salary it’s a win win for everyone.
c. There you have it folks, get some experience, get certified, get educated and start branding yourself on linked in and you will soon land a job and oh if you get a job using these techniques, you owe me coffee.
