A privileged account is an account that has been granted more privileges–either by default or manually–than an ordinary account. These privileges may allow it to access critical systems or sensitive data, and perform administrative functions.

Privileged accounts can be associated with roles such as IT administrators, security teams, database administrators, and third-party vendors. They can also be machine-to-machine or application-to-application accounts that run automatic operations without human interaction. These accounts can include local administrative accounts, privileged user accounts, domain administrative accounts, service accounts, and application accounts.

Privileged accounts are often targeted by threat actors due to the extensive access and control they provide over an organization's systems and data.
