Lexington Mosquito Treatment Business Sees Spike in Customers as Zika Virus Spreads

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) - The spring is in full effect but mosquito season is just getting started.

"We are just at the onslaught of the mosquito breeding season," Mosquito Authority co-owner Seth Hillenmeyer said. "It will continue to get worse as the temperatures rise throughout the year."

With an increase in the mosquito population, concern over the spread of the Zika virus is also on the rise.

"If we get sustained temperatures of 60 to 75 degrees for seven to 14 days at a time that's when that cycle really starts," Hillenmeyer said.

The Mosquito Authority will typically add around five new customers a week, but with concern over the spread of the Zika virus, that number has shot up to near 30 new customers a week.
