How to Pronounce: Pronouncing scientific terms – hypothesis

Today, we explore a word that can be difficult for native speakers of many languages – Persian, Russian, Japanese, and more.
What is this term?
Hypothesis.
A hypothesis is some kind of idea or suggestion that is made for the purpose of testing.
Hypothesis is a central term in the scientific method.
Why might it be difficult to pronounce?
There is one consonant sound that is difficult for speakers of many languages. It is the –th- sound.
We make the sound by putting our tongue between our lips, like this:
Then we blow out air and make sure that our vocal cords do not move. You can use your fingers to check, like this:
What else should you know about the word hypothesis?
English speakers put stress on the second part of the word. We do not stress the beginning or the end of the word.
We can clap on the stressed part of the word to clarify this point.
The work we have done today is very exact and specific. But the next time you read about or discuss scientific issues, you can have more confidence that you are pronouncing the word “hypothesis” correctly.
