The 3 busiest airports by passenger traffic likely aren't that surprising:
3. Denver
2. DFW
1. Atlanta
But by cargo traffic, the list might be a bit surprising:
3. Anchorage (!)
2. Memphis
1. Hong Kong
Anchorage just so happens to be on the great circle route connecting Asia and North America (almost right smack in the middle actually) so it's a convenient pit stop for transporting.
According to Alaska Business:
"A carrier can carry an additional 100,000 pounds of revenue cargo by making a fuel stop in Anchorage".
In what might be one of the best real estate deals of all time, the US purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 for $7.2M. In today's dollars that would be ~ $150M, or about $0.42 / acre!
