This amazing model was completely scratch-built by master modeler Wade Joos of Salt Lake City, Utah. It features a 100" wingspan, and is powered by 4xTurnigy Aerodrive C3548/900kV motors flying on 2x4s 6000 mAh batteries. YES, this beauty is flying on 4 cell power!
Some background on the model by Wade Joos:
"Scratch built to honor a gentleman that I had the privilege of getting to know, Doran Lewis. Doran flew 25 missions out of Saipan over Japan in their plane marked "V Square 50". There was a total of 3 planes marked V Square 50. The first was on a mission with an alternate crew and ran out of fuel on the way back. It landed near a ship and the crew was rescued. The second went in with all the crew aboard and killed all. Doran and his brother (a waist gunner, Doran was a tail gunner) were not on that flight by the flip of a coin. They got another plane and marked it up. It finished the war and returned to the US and was eventually melted down. Doran was a really neat guy. He shared lots of priceless stories with me.
I asked if he had any pictures of his nose art. He said "no, we didn't have any naked women on our plane, so nobody took any pictures". He said wait a minute and went over to his closet and there was his flight jacket that he flew in. The nose art is an actual picture of the back of his jacket. Unfortunately, Doran passed a couple of years ago...
The plane is scratch built:
100" wingspan
4 ea Turnigy 4835-900 motors
Runs on two 4s 6000 batteries in parallel, so 4 cell 12000
Brent made it dance in the sky. Thanks Brent."
The plane looks absolutely stunning flying the blue skies over St. George Utah, and is undeniably rock-stable in the air. What presence!
