Europe tries to take security matters into its own hands | The Bottom Line

The European Union faces numerous challenges, with defense on top of the list. Poland, currently helming the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, wanted the bloc to make a significant commitment to defense by allocating a separate budget solely to this area. A less ambitious plan has been adopted instead, with the EU leveraging its borrowing power on the international financial market to lend money to member states which would otherwise face higher interest rates. We talk about this initiative – called SAFE – and many others with Henning Vöpel, Director of the Center for European Policy.
