In the heart of the #Netherlands, nestled within the quaint town of 's-Hertogenbosch, lies a #neighborhood that seems plucked from the pages of a science fiction novel. This is #Bolwoningen, a collection of fifty spherical homes that stand as a testament to the visionary mind of #architect Dries #Kreijkamp.
Constructed in the 1980s, these orb-like dwellings were Kreijkamp's winning entry in a competition aimed at creating affordable social #housing. Their most striking feature is their modular #design, which theoretically allows them to be dismantled and reassembled in a single day, though no one has yet attempted this feat.
Each sphere, with its modest 55 square meters of space, is a marvel of compact living. Inside, the homes are uniformly arranged across three levels. The ground floor #houses a small storage room, while a spiral staircase leads to a cozy #bedroom and bathroom. Ascend further, and you'll find yourself in a combined kitchen and living area, bathed in light from the round windows that dot the structure.
Despite their otherworldly appearance, these homes are very much inhabited, offering a unique blend of futuristic design and everyday practicality. The residents of Bolwoningen live in a space that is as much a conversation piece as it is a home, a true embodiment of #innovative #architecture.
