Teenage Diane tags along with her mom to visit her mom’s friends who emigrated from the Dominican Republic to California. Diane quickly feels out of place since she can’t speak Spanish, and her mom's friends can't speak English. She meets Ángel, a teenage neighbor, who befriends her and teaches her the merengue. A reluctant Diane starts enjoying herself, finding a way to connect to her culture and eventually her mom without needing any translation.
