Retail Investor is a non-professional individual investor. Retail Investors purchase and sell securities for their own personal accounts through traditional or online brokers.

Retail investors are you and me. Just regular people who buy and sell securities for their own personal reasons.

The amount of capital invested is usually significantly smaller in comparison to institutional investors. And if you are not sure what an institutional investor means, feel free to watch my next video.

Comparing to the past, retail investors now have all the means to be successful on the stock market. Financial education is easily accessible. Online brokers can be accessed from smartphones. And the number of analytical tools is huge. So, there is no reason for any person not to increase his or her financial literacy.

Retail investors are often criticized for making unjustified decisions and causing panic selling. But at any point in time, stock market has always been irrational. So, it is hard to draw conclusions in my opinion.

Retail investors have to find the information themselves and make their investment decisions based on their findings. However, most brokerages offer financial services. Basically, for an additional fee they will help you manage your investment portfolio.

The SEC acknowledges retail investors as less educated, less skillful, and less disciplined. That is why the SEC protects such investors by prohibiting them from certain investments and limiting their access to some sophisticated financial instruments.
