This lake in the Middle of North America is literally known as the Graveyard of Ships.
Welcome to Lake Superior – the largest freshwater lake in the world. It’s so massive that you could fit an entire European country, like Austria inside its boundaries. To put into perspective – the lake covers more than 80,000 square kilometers with depths reaching more than 400 meters into the water.
But what makes Lake Superior so deadly are the shipwrecks – more than 350 ships have sunk here, with over 200 of them lost in the deadly stretch between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point. This area is called the "Graveyard of the Great Lakes".
But what makes this part of the lake so dangerous?
In the fall season, the temperature difference between the cold air and warm water creates powerful winds that can reach speeds up to 110 km/h, causing waves to rise as high as 9 meters – making the lake a nightmare for sailors.
Today, these shipwrecks are protected under the Whitefish Point Underwater Preserve, ensuring they remain intact for future generations of sports divers to explore.
