Why were you laid off?

There might be multiple reasons given the current market scenario. You might want to rant about it however, you should never say negative about a company in an interview. It reflects a lot of things about you. Always tell them about your learnings and your future goals. Also, don't mention that you want to join just because you do not have any other option. Be optimistic about everything.

Here are sample answers-

1. Last year, the company took a hard look at its organizational structure. The last thing they wanted to do was eliminate jobs, but it was a small company and I was one of 6 people who were let go.
One thing that I’ve learned through this process is to make myselfmore skiful and to take more responsibility to invest in my career and myself. I have also enrolled myself in a new course in order to achieve so.

2. My employer was acquired by a larger company in another state. The other company was in the same business. However, at that time, they did not have any suitable job role for me in my desired location due to which I had to resign.

3. To reduce expenses, the company decided to shut down our entire division, which impacted 15% of its workforce. Unfortunately, I was one of those people.
I have had time to re-assess my strengths, skills, and interests.
