President Donald Trump met with Ksenia Karelina, a Russian-American ballerina, who was freed last week as part of a prisoner swap.
The White House posted a video online of Trump and Karelina meeting at the White House on Monday.
The two shook hands as Trump asked Karelina how long she was in jail, and she replied "15 months."
Karelina was released in exchange for Arthur Petrov, who was arrested in Cyprus in August 2023 at the request of the U.S. on charges of smuggling sensitive microelectronics to Russia.
Ksenia Karelina, also identified in some media as Ksenia Khavana, lived in Maryland before moving to Los Angeles. The Associated Press reported that Karelina was arrested when she returned to Russia to visit her family in 2024.
Karelina was arrested in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg in February 2024 and convicted of treason on charges related to a donation of almost $52 to a charity aiding Ukraine, the Associated Press reported.
The Federal Security Service, or FSB, Russia's main security and counterintelligence agency, told the AP that Putin pardoned Karelina before the prisoner swap, and released a video showing her being escorted to a plane somewhere in Russia.
According to the AP, the video then showed what seemingly was the scene of an exchange at the Abu Dhabi airport, with Arthur Petrov, walking off a plane and shaking hands with Russian officials on the tarmac.
Karelina was among a number of Americans arrested in Russia in recent years as tensions between Moscow and Washington, D.C. increased over the war in Ukraine.
Her release is the latest in a series of high-profile prisoner exchanges between Russia and the U.S. in the last three years — and the second since President Donald Trump returned to the White House and reversed Washington, D.C.’s policy of isolating Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
