Excel - Enter Numbers in Millionths - Episode 1817

Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Entering Numbers in Millionths Made Easy in Excel | Excel Tips and Tricks.

Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing a handy trick for quickly entering numbers in millionths in Excel. This is a common frustration for many Excel users, as miscounting the zeros can lead to incorrect calculations. But fear not, we have a solution for you!

During a conversation with Jim from Timken, he shared with me his job of measuring tolerances and the need to enter numbers in millions, such as 12-millionth or .000012. Jim discovered a hidden feature in Excel that automatically inserts a decimal point, making the process much easier. To access this feature, go to File, then Options, and under Advanced, you will find the option to automatically insert a decimal point. You can even control the number of decimal places, up to six.

This feature may seem familiar to those who have used an old adding machine, where entering 1234 would result in $12.34. However, Jim has found a clever use for it by setting it to six decimal places. Now, all he has to do is enter 12, followed by the six digits, and Excel will insert the correct number of decimal places every time. But here's the interesting part - this feature can also be used for negative numbers. For example, if you need to enter numbers in thousands, you can simply enter 12 and it will become 12,000.

This feature is not only useful for entering tolerances in millionths, but also for anyone who needs to enter data in thousands, millionths, or even billionths. It saves you from having to enter all those extra zeros, making your work much more efficient. So, a big thank you to Jim for sharing this tip with us. And thank you for tuning in to this episode of the MrExcel podcast. Don't forget to subscribe for more helpful Excel tips and tricks. See you next time!
