When growing tomatoes, be aware of tomato suckers. Tomato suckers are shoots that grow between the main stem of the tomato plant and its leaves. They take their name from "sucking" the growing energy and production out of the main growth of the plant, as well as block sunlight from the flower clusters which produce the tomato fruits. Simply trim them off with pruning shears periodically as the tomato plant grows.
If you would like to grow your tomatoes tall, you may want to consider tying your tomato plant to a hollow metal pole. You can extend your tomato's support stake by placing a bamboo pole in the hollow of the metal pole and using the tomato plant to tie it up.
