belt "pops" during filling

it's ten "flights" long, but when the center of mass crosses the periodic X boundary, and the belt reenters from the other side, it's not in exactly the same position

this causes unexpected overlaps in the hertzian contact model, resulting in a "pop"

Any suggestions on how to mitigate?
