The video picks up after World War 2, as we view Stalin's USSR until his death in 1953. We then see the brief power struggle before Khrushchev takes over bringing in a very different era. From there, we enter the long lasting Brezhnev era, bringing back a more hardline Soviet Union and period of stagnation. We also check out some of the culture of the time with Soviet Realism, and both the benefits and hardship of living in the Soviet Union during the postwar period.
By the mid-1980s, the USSR transforms significantly under Gorbachev's leadership, but glasnost and perestroika open up a Pandora's Box that has massive consequences for the behemoth state.
The People's Republic of China, the next largest Communist state, would fare better, but faced significant problems early on. Under Mao Zedong, industrialization was initially smooth, but overly ambitious goals led to the Great Leap Forward, and ultimately the Great Chinese Famine. Further peril came during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, a time of immense turmoil.
After Mao's death, China pivoted to a system of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, under Deng Xiaoping, and later the Three Represents, under Jiang Zemin. Watch as the reforms turned China from a largely agricultural nation, into an urban and industrial powerhouse on the world stage.

If you've watched our History of the World documentary, the project is a perfect next step. The videos are standalone, but presented in a chronological fashion.
