The failure of air defence systems acquired from China has dented Pakistan’s defence posture and the credibility of Chinese weapons. The actions of the Indian Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor has tilted the strategic balance in the region towards India. Pakistan’s reliance on Chinese weapons has cost the country dearly.
The centrepiece, the HQ-9 system, was destroyed in Karachi and Lahore, giving India a free hand if it chose to escalate. China’s PL-15 missile, touted as superior to Western missiles in the CCP’s propaganda, proved ineffective.
Several other Chinese weapons failed in this conflict. India’s air defence successfully neutralised hypersonic missiles fired by Pakistan. Given that 75-80% of Pakistan’s defence equipment comes from China, this raises serious concerns about their battle-readiness.
When questioned about the performance of Chinese weapons used by Pakistan, China’s defence ministry spokesperson evaded the inquiry with a vague general statement, as reported by Chinese state media.
This conflict exposed critical vulnerabilities in Chinese defence exports, shifting the narrative on their military effectiveness.
