Elon Musk might say you don't need a college degree, but try going to work for him if you don't.

Seriously, I like what Musk is doing, but sometimes he's cringing my terrible human being.

Go to the Jobs section of SpaxeX or Tesla.

How many openings do you see that don't require a degree? None.

Now,

teeeeeeeeechnically,

he's correct. You don't need a degree.

But not having a degree means a lot of doors are closed to you.

Not just at Tesla or SpaceX, but at many other places. You have less freedom of action.

There are certain professions and

certain careers you will never, ever participate in the end.

There are a few paths open to you where you don't need a degree:

1. You're rich. Your parents have important connections and lots of money.

2. You're not rich, but you have developed a key technology, invention, or platform compelling enough to attract rich investors, and you then hire people with degrees to make it happen.

3. You're not rich, but you've developed a specific technical skill that's highly in demand just when you need work

4. You're not rich, but you're okay working low-level menial factory, service, resource extraction, or labor jobs.

So no, you don't need a degree.

It's just that you need rich parents, you need to arrive at the right market at the right time with the right skills, or you need one of the increasingly shorter list of opportunities where a degree isn't necessary.
