How Siri Works - Tech Concepts in 30 seconds

I had to cheat a bit on this one 😅

Fuller explanation below 👇

Did you know Siri makes fun of you if you ask it what 0 divided by 0 is? But did you also know that Siri is always (partially) listening to you?

Think of Siri or any voice assistant as having four parts: the detector, speech recognition, natural language understanding, and response generation.

So yes, Siri is always listening through the detector. It continuously takes in your voice, converts the stream of pressure waves into numbers, groups those numbers into 0.2-second frames, then determines what sound each frame makes. If those combined sounds match “Hey Siri,” it starts phase 2: speech recognition.

Speech recognition is similar to the detector, but instead of just listening for “Hey Siri,” it sends the recording to the cloud. There, a natural language processor determines the words and sequences you’re saying, trained to know that “schedule event” is good and “schedule hawk” is bad.

Once it figures out what you’re saying, it moves to natural language understanding. It breaks your words down again to look for intent and entities in your speech.

After identifying your verbs and nouns, it picks out a selection of APIs (or extensions) to do the job.

Finally, it generates a response and sends it back to your phone from the cloud.
