Hiding in the corner at networking events isn’t networking - it’s just surviving.
But if you’re not confident about starting conversations..
..here’s the best move: bring someone who is.
1️⃣ Find Your “Charismatic Wingman.”
This should be someone who’s great at starting conversations and making others feel comfortable.
They don’t need to be in your field, but they should be someone you trust to handle the room.
Action Step:
Invite a colleague, mentor, or friend who’s naturally social and confident at events.
Make sure they know your goals for the event so they can steer conversations in the right direction.
2️⃣ Let Them Do the Heavy Lifting.
Your wingman breaks the ice, handles introductions, and sets the tone.
You don’t have to stress about starting every conversation..
..you can jump in with value when the time’s right.
Action Step:
Listen for opportunities to chime in with expertise or jokes.
3️⃣ Build Credibility by Association.
Being with someone charming makes you look good.
It shows you’re part of a social, competent group.
Then, when you contribute value, it reinforces that you know your stuff.
Action Step:
Focus on adding high-value points during the conversation.
This could be making a joke, asking thoughtful questions, or offering a solution to a problem being discussed.
Networking isn’t about doing it all yourself.
Bringing someone charismatic not only makes it easier..
..but helps you look confident and competent without the pressure.
