Dr. Alison Halsall is Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities at York University. She is the Coordinator of the Children, Childhood and Youth Program at York, an undergraduate program that takes an interdisciplinary approach to understanding childhood from the perspective of children. The program prepares students for work in fields such as advocacy, counselling, education, health and wellness, and international development, all related to the rights and the experiences of children and youth.
Dr. Halsall’s research deals with graphic texts, at topic we’ve looked at in two previous episodes of this podcast. If you missed the episodes featuring Dr. Lamia Balafrej of UCLA and Dr. Fatoumata Seck of Stanford University, you might want to go back and listen to them.
My conversation with Alison Halsall was a real joy for me to take part in. We talked about her new book, Growing Up Graphic: The Comics of Children in Crisis. The book deals with some very tough topics, including child soldiers and migrant children, so those topics do come up in our interview. With that in mind, I do hope you enjoy our conversation.
