क्रोधः संहारचण्डश्च, अष्टभैरव ते नमः ।।

I bow to great Ashta Bhairavs

Bhairava, as the ultimate cause of creation and dissolution of the universe, manifests in eight forms, known as the Aṣṭa-Bhairava.

The eight Bhairavas also correspond to the Vedic deities of the cardinal directions, such as Indra, Agni, Yama, Varuna, and others, serving as protectors or Kshetrapalas.

They safeguard the practitioner (sadhaka) and the sacred space of practice (sadhana) from negative influences. Just as the Matrikas are different aspects of one Goddess, the Bhairavas are manifestations of the singular Bhairava principle.
