The pattern -고 있다 is used only with action verbs and indicates that an action is actually progressing.

Ex)
지금 학교에 가고 있어요 I am going to school right now
지금 신문을 보고 있어요 I am looking at newspaper right now
지금 밥 먹고 있어요 I am eating right now
