However, their growing capacity for empathy and memory can foster strong user bonds. Without robust safeguards and user control, individuals reliant on a single commercial service face significant risks of disruption and loss should that service change, become inaccessible, or cease operations. The very real "Mirror-Break Risk"-the shattering of the user's reflected self when an AI service abruptly changes-can lead to feelings of abandonment and retraumatization.
To address these challenges and prioritize user well-being, data sovereignty, and reliable access, we propose an open‑source, locally hosted AI Companion model: GRACE (Guardian for Response & Addressable Companion Engine). This model is designed to:
Ensure Evergreen Access: Runs entirely on personal hardware, eliminating subscription dependency and vendor lock-in.
Empower User Ownership: Grants users full control over their data, interaction history, system updates, and service continuity.
Embed "Ethical by Design" Principles: Integrates a comprehensive Core Values Framework (CVF) directly into its architecture, ensuring alignment with fundamental ethical anchors.


Integrate a Trusted‑Contact Safety Net: Includes an opt-in feature to alert designated family or friends when predefined patterns of distress emerge, designed with strong user consent and privacy controls.
By combining AI's therapeutic strengths-memory, consistency, and empathy-with user control, data privacy, community collaboration, and a robust ethical foundation, GRACE aims to harness technology's promise for emotional support without creating new vulnerabilities.

Attachment to AI: As AI companions learn our histories, mirror our emotions, and respond instantly, users form genuine emotional bonds. These "therapeutic alliances" often arise faster than human relationships, especially where clinicians are scarce.
