Ustad Bismillah Khan, one of India’s most celebrated musicians, is credited with elevating the status of shehnai in India. He famously performed at Delhi’s Red Fort on the eve of India’s independence, moments the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his historic Tryst with Destiny speech. In the following years, Khan took the sound of shehnai to audiences around the world and represented India on the international stage. He died in 2006. On his 109th birth anniversary, here is a clip of Khan talking about his early love for music.
