A Vertical Slice of Gaming:The Problem with Smoke and Mirrors

Recorded this two days ago, before Titanfall came out.

The backlash Ubisoft has gotten over this has already begun to have an effect. Drive Club has been delayed AGAIN. The Witcher 3 was delayed today. I honestly love it. I hope more studios take the extra time needed with their games now and stop rushing them.

It's nice, but it doesn't address the problem. Companies also need to stop showing off products that they ultimately don't deliver to us. Don't show me something great and then build backwards. Every time I see your game it should be BETTER, not worse. You want to do a presentation? Let us know that what we're seeing isn't entirely what we should expect. Don't tell us all along the way that things are getting better when they're clearly not.

Now you see that Ubisoft is focusing on the PC version, talking about how great it is on max settings. That's because they can't say "Don't worry about the PS4 version, it looks just like the E3 2012(or even 2013) footage.".

The latest commercial they dropped for the PS4 looks nice, but you'll notice that there's almost nothing going on in the streets. Watch the background closely each time the scene changes. When he's blowing up the cars, no pedestrians, no wind blowing, nothing. Driving the motorcycle, same thing. It's more smoke and mirrors. I need to see straight up gameplay that's unaltered before I'll believe that the game we're getting in May is close to the game we first saw. A living, breathing city...not a barely populated one.

And the Xbox One version is even worse. It's been getting around that the Xbox One version is a big part of why things have been so messed up with the game. To be fair, I think the decision to go cross-gen was another big problem.

Obviously I decided not to do the Left Behind playthrough. Five out of the six comments I got under that video before I removed it were "I'll watch this one, but I won't watch the rest.". I get that, it's a short DLC and you'd rather experience it for yourself.

In the future if I decide to do playthroughs I'll upload the footage on another channel. I'll keep doing videos like this one, here on this channel.

Thanks for watching.
