How are India's demographics and fertility rate changing? What does that mean for the nation's future? Dr. Christopher Murray, Chair and Professor of Health Metrics Sciences and Director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, says "India's fertility rate is much higher than China right now...India is moving towards having replacement fertility...China is down around 1.2. So huge differences in fertility. But the thing about India that's interesting is that the fertility rate in India has dropped absolutely precipitously...India's peak will come in about a generation. We expect the peak in India's population around about 2050, about 1.6 billion people."
