During the medal ceremony for the 200m run at the 1968 Olympics, American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in the Black Power Salute while Australian Peter Norman stood beside them. All 3 athletes suffered terrible backlash for this display but it bonded them for life.
