Today is International Mother Language Day! In Sweden, we have around 200 different mother languages.
Apart from Swedish – the country's official main language – some of the biggest are Arabic, Bosnian, Croatian, Dari, Finnish, Persian, Polish, Serbian, Somali, Spanish, Tigrinya and Turkish.
The Swedish school system strives to offer mother tongue studies to all pupils who have another mother tongue than Swedish.
During the 2022–2023 school year, 178,000 schoolchildren took part in mother tongue tuition, according to statistics from the Swedish National Agency for Education.
