The Siege of Aratta was a battle between the civilization of Aratta and the Kingdom of Uruk under the reign of Enmerkar. Described soley in Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta, Enmerkar led an Uruk army through the Zagros Mountains to lay siege to Aratta, a civilization of enormous wealth full of gold, silver, lapis lazulli and other precious materials. Aratta, only atested to in Sumerian mythology, was geographically isolated and difficult to reach and home to the goddess Inanna. Enmerkar becomes the first Sumerian to reach Aratta and successfully lay siege to it. After a year of siege, Aratta either capitulates to Uruk, or is sacked. Regardless, Uruk conquered Aratta.
