The most distant known objects in the Solar System 😮

Check out the incredible orbits of FarOut and FarFarOut, two of the most distant trans-Neptunian objects ever observed! 🌌✨

🌌 FarFarOut (2018 AG37): Holding the title for the farthest known object in the solar system at a staggering 132 AU from the Sun, FarFarOut takes over 1,000 years to orbit our star!

🚀 FarOut (2018 VG18): The previous record holder for the farthest object in the Solar System, estimated to be 124 AU from the Sun. FarOut is a pinkish world more than 120 times farther than Earth, with an orbit that also takes more than 1,000 years to complete.

However, none of these objects holds the record for the largest orbital semi-major axis (half the longest diameter of an ellipse, which is the shape of most orbits).

For comparison, the planetoid 90377 Sedna has a semi-major axis of about 500 AU, while the scattered-disc object 2014 FE72 has an even more extreme semi-major axis of about 1,400 AU! In 2021, however, 2014 FE72 will be only about 64 AU from the Sun, about half the distance of FarOut.

These distant, icy worlds give us a glimpse into the far reaches of our Solar System, where mysteries about the formation and evolution of planetary bodies await discovery! ✨
