Taiyuan Ancient City, commonly known as "Phoenix City", because it was founded in the Ming Dynasty and known as the Ming Taiyuan County, is located in the Jinyang Ancient City site, Jinyuan District, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China, was founded in the eighth year of the Ming Hongwu (1375), covering an area of about 0.8 square kilometers. There are 79 existing cultural relics buildings in the city, 49 of which are listed for protection by the Taiyuan Municipal government, among which the Temple of Taiyuan County is listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit. The city wall of Taiyuan ancient County is divided into east, south, west and north four sides, and fully closed, with a total length of 3,700 meters and a total construction area of 77,000 square meters.

Ming Hongwu four years (1371), Pingjin County government moved to the west of Fenshui, the original Northern Song Dynasty was burned by Song Taizong Jin Yangcheng south pass. In the eighth year of Hongwu (1375), Pingjin County was renamed Taiyuan County. In the first year of Jingtai (1450), the governor Liu Min began to build a city on top of the old foundation. By the 1950s, the city wall was gradually destroyed, and only a few hundred meters of ruins, the west gate and the north gate remained.

In 2012, the restoration project of the ancient county seat of Taiyuan was started, and it was officially opened on May 1, 2021 after eight years of renovation.

Taiyuan County in Ming Dynasty has been listed as a historical and cultural block in Shanxi Province.
