I just don't get why multiple windows are such a huge problem at Apple.

They seriously lack any keyboard-only tools to manage large number of windows and have thru out their history done almost anything to prevent opening second instance of a program. I still remember days when you could have only on Finder-window. Now it is possible, but without preview images on the dock, or on the cmd+tab finding the right window is a mess.
