Bullsh*t Alert: How the Media Misrepresents the Real Cost of Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving, mainstream media highlighted a report from the American Farm Bureau Federation claiming the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people is about $58—a 5% drop from last year.

Huh?

Where are these people shopping?

Buried in the report's fine print, the addition of just three traditional Thanksgiving staples—ham, Russet potatoes, and green beans—raises the average cost to $84.70. That’s a staggering 31% jump.

In this fiery commentary from Tuesday’s The Macro Show, Hedgeye CEO Keith McCullough pulled no punches calling out how disconnected the media is from the financial struggles of everyday Americans.

“What’s going on in this world right now is enraging to many, but opportunistic to the few,” McCullough states. “We’re the few. We’re fortunate, we’re grateful, and we are very well aware of what’s going on. We’re empathizing with all of those people who can’t afford Thanksgiving.”

McCullough challenges viewers to think critically about the media narrative:

“To do something about it, you have to show people the truth, you have to have them believe and bring them into a community they can trust. Because what we have currently is bullshit.”
