Dahlak Archipelago: Yemen's Foothold in Eritrea?

Eritrea has 350+ islands and more than 100 of them can be found in the Dahlak Archipelago. Located some 36 miles off the Eritrean coast, this island group was likely one of the first places in the Horn of Africa to embrace Islam. In time, a medieval kingdom called the Dahlak Sultanate would emerge, which played a role in a power struggle between the Najahid and Sulayhid dynasties over in Yemen. The Sultanate would also join the Adal Sultanate in its war with Abyssinian (i.e. Ethiopia). In more recent times, the Dahlak Archipelago housed an infamous colonial-era, Italian prison camp and even a Soviet military base.
