Immunosuppressants are drugs that suppress the immune system. They are most commonly prescribed to deal with the symptoms of autoimmune disease and following transplant surgery to reduce the risk of the transplanted organ being rejected. This pharmacology lecture discusses mechanism of action of the major classes of immunosuppressive drugs, which include; Calcineurin inhibitors, Costimulation blockers, mTOR inhibitors, Antimetabolites, Corticosteroids, and Antibodies.
