The Hydromea ExRay is the World's 1st Wireless Underwater drone. It uses light instead of a tether.
Its developer is a Swiss startup called Hydromea. The functioning prototype utilizes the company's existing Luma underwater communications system.
The Exray transmits binary data through the water via rapid pulses of light.
Because the data is transmitted at a rate of 10 megabits per second, even HD video from ExRay's onboard camera can be relayed with virtually no lag.
Although it currently has a communications range of 50 m (164 ft) in clear water and in complete darkness, that figure decreases as ambient light and turbidity levels increase.
