Your brain has a built-in emergency response system.
It constantly redirects resources based on what it thinks you need. While it's usually accurate, sometimes it gets things wrong. When your midbrain (specifically the amygdala) perceives danger, it triggers one of four survival responses.
The freeze response is like a "deer in headlights" reaction. It can be triggered by actual danger OR by an overwhelming buildup of everyday stressors. When stress levels get too high, your amygdala interprets it as a life-threatening danger.
You don't get to "choose" these survival responses. They're designed to bypass your conscious thinking because they're pure survival mechanisms.
